 — Wake County Schools announced on Friday afternoon that the sports suspension has once again been extended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

High school athletics in Wake County, the state's largest school district, were set to begin on Monday, but the suspension has now been extended with no set date for return.

"After careful review of COVID-19 trends in Wake County and in the state of North Carolina, we have determined that it is not prudent to resume athletic and co-curricular activities at this time, nor for the foreseeable future. Therefore all voluntary workouts and practices are suspended indefinitely," the district wrote in an email to school administrators.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association allowed high schools to begin limited summer workouts on June 15 with strict protocols in place to help mitigate risk from the virus. However, most school districts did not allow their teams to return to workouts that day.

As of Friday afternoon, HighSchoolOT has identified 58 school districts that have resumed limited workouts across North Carolina. 41 school districts remain suspended, while there is no information from 18 districts. Chatham County is the lone school district in the Triangle area that has allowed summer workouts to resume.

Currently, the fall sports season is scheduled to begin on Aug. 1, however NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said this week that the date is subject to change based on next week's announcement from Governor Roy Cooper about the reopening of schools. Tucker said if schools reopen in Plan A, which means everyone is on campus with limited social distancing, the Aug. 1 date would likely remain in place. Plan B, which means some students would be in person and some students would be virtual, and Plan C, which is all virtual, could mean schedule changes would have to be made.

The NCHSAA has not yet approved any plan to change the schedule for the fall sports season, and Tucker said any plan to do so would have to go through the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, the Education Advisory Committee, receive member feedback, and ultimately be approved by the NCHSAA Board of Directors.

Cary IMP Club Needs Your Help To Support the CHS Student Athletes!

High School Sports is more than just a fun part of the High School experience.  Studies have shown that High School Sports develops a “Well Rounded Adult.”  Athletics teaches teamwork, cooperation, and builds confidence.  Wake County provides less than $900 total yearly for all our student-athletes, for ALL of our 35 Varsity and JV teams.

The IMP Club, through fundraising efforts, provides more than 60% of the CHS Athletic Department Budget.  98% of the money raises goes directly to support the student athletes (i.e. facilities maintenance and repair, uniforms, etc.)

The IMP Club needs your help to support the fundraising efforts - training is provided.

Get INVOLVED - come to the next Club meeting to see how YOU can help - it's FUN!
